Product Information

Biosecurity

How do I use Quill Clean & Dri Powder?

Quill Clean & Dri Powder is an absorbent disinfectant bedding powder for use in animal housing.

For good biosecurity practice, we recommend layering up Quill Clean & Dri under and throughout shavings or straw by sprinkling it throughout.

How do I clean and disinfect boots effectively?

As following Defra guidance, boots should be pre-cleaned with brushes before being disinfected. To do this effectively, we recommend first using our Quill Cleaning Boot Dip with a detergent such as Shift, and then following with our Quill Disinfecting Boot Dip and an iodophor-based disinfectant such as FAM 30 or Virophor 2.8%.

Feeders

Which Feeder should I use for my birds?

We stock a range of feeders for a wide variety of different size flocks. We recommend using red chick trays with chicks, then moving onto using mid and large size capacity feeders such as the Quill Midi Feeder and Quill Feed Bin Kit from poults to adult birds.

I need to replace part of my feeder. Can I order spares?

We stock a full range of spare parts for your feeders so you can simply replace the part without having to replace the whole feeder.

How do I fill with feed using the Quill Midi Feeder Divider?

The Quill Midi Feeder Divider was designed to split the inside of the Quill Midi Feeder into four sections, meaning that up to four different types of feed can be used.

Start by placing the two dividers back to back inside the main feeder tube so that they form an X shape, with the slanted ends at the bottom. Fill inside the two divider sections first, alternating between the two so that they push against each other. Fill the remaining two sections to the same level.

Drinkers & Water Hygiene

Which Nipple drinker should I use?

Making sure all your birds have plenty of access to clean water is essential for good welfare. Use the chart below to calculate which drinker size is required for your size of flock.

Why should I choose a Nipple drinker?

Under the Defra Guidance pubished in 2022, Nipple drinkers are recommended to prevent drinking water from becoming contaminated. As well as ensuring that disease and biofilm cannot enter the drinking water, the shiny nipples also encourage birds to tap and drink more. Stainless steel drinker nipples will also stimulate birds, helping to prevent problems such as feather pecking amongst a flock.

What is biofilm?

Biofilm is a layer of bacteria or microbes which builds up on the surface of a structure such as water pipe. Biofilm blockages in waterlines can appear within hours. Bacteria growing within the structure of biofilm can grow rapidly and are hard to treat with antibiotics.

Why should I use a hydrogen peroxide water sanitiser?

When using Vitamins & Supplements through your waterlines, it is important that you use a water sanitiser to prevent the build up of biofilm. Quill Water-Pure is a hydrogen peroxide water sanitiser stabilised with advanced silver. Using Quill Water-Pure at a daily maintenance rate will prevent a build up of biofilm.

Vermin Traps

How do I set a MK6/ MK4 Fenn Spring Trap?

Instructions for how to set a MK4 Fenn Trap are available here.

Check out our Youtube channel for a step by step video of how to set a Quill Vermin Trap Box with MK4 Spring Fenn Trap.

What are the benefits of using Vermin Traps?

Vermin Traps are an effective method for successful rodent control without using rodenticides. From 4th July 2024, the use of anticoagulant rodenticides will no longer be permitted in open areas. The Quill Vermin Trap Box and Quill 150 Spring Trap Box were both designed to be used with their respective traps for years.

Do I need a license to use Vermin traps?

You do not need a license to use Vermin Traps. We recommend reading the instructions included with your trap and watching the 'How To' videos for the Quill Youtube channel before attempting to set the trap.

How do I set a Quill 150 Spring Trap?

Instructions for how to set the Quill 150 Fenn Spring Trap are available here.
Check out our Youtube channel for a step by step video of how to set a Quill 150 Spring Trap & Box.

Can the MK6 Fenn Trap be used with the Quill Vermin Trap box?

The Quill Vermin Trap Box is compatible with the MK4 Fenn Spring Trap only. The MK6 Spring Fenn Trap is too large to use inside the Quill Vermin Trap Box.

Where should I put the bait when using a trap?

When using a MK4 or MK6 Spring Fenn Trap we always recommend placing the bait under the trap instead of on the treadle plate. This increases the likelihood that you will achieve a humane head kill. The Quill 150 Spring Trap has a bait hole to hold bait in place, including an egg for stoats

Which Trap should I use to trap stoats?

The Quill 150 Spring Trap is approved for trapping stoats in England, Scotland and Wales when set in a suitable tunnel such as the Quill 150 Spring Trap & Trap Box.

Rodenticides

Do I need a rodenticide certificate?

Under the UK Rodenticide Stewardship Scheme run by the CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) set up in 2015, certification is required for the purchase of rat baits used outside buildings or over 1kg in quantity.

When you purchase rat bait through our website we require a copy of valid rat certificate/ farm assurance membership, completed CRRU form & photo ID before dispatch.

Once received, proof of certification & photo ID are kept on customer file and can be used for future orders.

For all information on rodenticide information click here.

How much rodenticide do I need?

Each 150g pouch contains 6 x 25g sachets enough for between 1-3 rat bait points. Medium to high infestations require a number of bait points. Bait refills may be required to replenish any bait taken. Once bait-take has stopped, the infestation has been controlled, so bait must be withdrawn from the bait stations and disposed of correctly.

Which rodenticide should I use?

For mouse infestations, we recommend a specially formulated rodenticide such as Black Pearl Paste. For smaller rodent infestations we recommend starting to bait using a multiple-feed bait such as Ruby or Jade.
Sapphire Bait was formulated to solve the toughest rat and the mouse infestations. As a single-feed poison containing Brodifacoum, it delivers a lethal dose in one feed.

How often should I use Quill Boost Tonic?

Quill Boost Tonic should be dosed continually in the drinking water from chicks to adult birds because it contains organic acids. The organic acids works by lowering the pH of the water to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria and therefore best results are achieved when Quill Boost Tonic is used every day at the same rate of 1ml: 1000ml drinking water.

Supplements & Vitamins

Can I use more than one supplement at the same time?

You can dose more than one of our supplements into drinking water at the same time, however we always recommend using a hydrogen peroxide water sanitiser such as Quill Water-Pure alongside dosing supplements to ensure that biofilm blockages are prevented. We also recommend that any supplements are either dosed straight into the waterline using a peristaltic pump or mixed into the water in smaller drinkers, never as a 'neat' solution.

Which supplement should I use in hot weather?

During periods of hot weather, animals can easily become dehydrated. We recommend using an electrolyte such as Quill Lyte Plus (for Poultry & Gamebirds) or Quill Lyte (For Poultry & Pigs).

Why do I need to use a water sanitiser when putting supplements through the waterlines?

It is important to always use a water sanitiser when dosing Vitamins & Supplements in waterlines to prevent the build up of biofilm. If left untreated, naturally occurring biofilm will build up in the line, eventually causing a blockage.

Which supplement should I give chicks?

It is crucial that chicks recieve the nutrients they need in their first few days of life.

For the first 48 hours of a chicks life, we usually recommend our electrolyte with added B vitamins, Quill Lyte Plus. For game birds, we recommend using this alongside Quill Boost Tonic.
